SGEONet – Stereonet Application for Structural Geologists

Developed in-house by the Structural Geology Company, SGEONet is a stereonet plotting tool designed to support structural geologists during logging and mapping. Available as a free download for Windows and Mac, SGEONet allows fast and efficient plotting of structural measurements directly from field data.

The application was originally developed to meet our own need for a practical tool during geological logging—one that enables immediate visualisation of measurements without the need for manual symbol adjustments or data formatting.

Key Features
•       Direct Excel Import
Import logging or mapping data with minimal setup. Required columns include Inclination, Azimuth, and Geometry (line or plane). An optional Type column (e.g. bedding, foliation, fold axes, or user-defined categories) can be used to colour-code data automatically.
•       Automatic Column Detection
Standard column headers are detected automatically. For non-standard datasets, users can assign columns manually via intuitive dropdown menus.
•       Customisable Plotting
Select and filter features using straightforward controls. Data can be filtered by category or numerical range—ideal for isolating structures within specific depth intervals or zones.
•       In-App Data Editing
Edit structural data directly within the application and save changes without the need for external processing.
•       High-Resolution Export
Export stereonet plots in various high-resolution formats, suitable for reports, presentations, and documentation.

SGEONet is completely free to use – developed by structural geologists, for structural geologists. While we have made every effort to ensure the application is as stable and reliable as possible, occasional bugs may still occur. Use of the application is therefore at the user’s own risk.

If you encounter any issues or bugs, we would greatly appreciate it if you could report them to: sgeonet@sgeo.fi.

SGEO Rocket Launcher

After working for some time with various “rocket launchers”, i.e., core orientation devices allowing the direct measurement of orientations of structures within a core, we at SGEO identified significant potential for improvement. Consequently, we developed a new core orientation device using industrial-grade aluminium profile and stainless steel bolts. The result is a non-magnetic and exceptionally sturdy, durable, and portable core orientation device, which can hold any core sizes from BQ to PQ.

Our device weighs 2.7 kg, measures 51 cm in length, and is 18 cm wide. It features robust, lockable hinges that support the beams holding the core and allow the core dip to be adjusted from 0 to 90 degrees without the need for additional support as often found in other devices. These extra supports can obscure parts of the core, complicating compass measurements, and with the new design, we got rid of these. We furthermore designed a 2 cm gap between the support beams, facilitating the alignment of the orientation line and providing a clear view of the core from behind. Additionally, we added small side wings to enhance the device’s stability. There are two hinges which can hold up 150 kg of load, which is sufficient to hold any core lengths up to 60 cm on the device. The hinges are be adjusted and tightened manually, and the levers used for the tightening have a ratchet function so that one does not need to rotate them in full circles to carry out the tightening, which is helpful if there are only a little of space to use the launcher. The profiles holding the actual core have a length of 40 cm.

If you are interested in acquiring one or if you have any questions on the device, please contact us at sales@sgeo.fi and we will provide you with a quote and delivery options.
